Another Mountain State success story! Ryan Hawkins arrived at our Fairmont office with complaints of debilitating back pain and balance issues. Prior to starting physical therapy he was having a fear of falling with most activities on his feet and he was having difficulty with stairs. Ryan also had terrible back pain with bending & lifting tasks. Ryan was treated by Gabe Wilson DPT, OCS and Tim Elliott PTA. PT treatment consisted of hands-on lumbar mobilizations and LE stretching. Ryan also completed core stability exercises (bridges, table planks, rows on PB), functional lifts like RDL, sled pushing, and dynamic balance activities on unstable surfaces to address strength and balance. Ryan’s pain and function improved dramatically with PT. Recently he was able to compete in the State Special Olympics and earned a silver medal! Congratulations Ryan!

The American Physical Therapy Association established the specialist certification program to formally recognize physical therapists with advanced clinical knowledge, experience, and skills in a special area of practice and to help consumers/patients and the health care community identify these physical therapists. These physical therapists have become part of an elite community of health care professionals dedicated to exceptional patient carethrough specialized training and education.
Clinical specialization in physical therapy responds to a specific area of patient need and requires knowledge, skill, and experience exceeding that of the physical therapist at entry level into the profession.
A few stated purposes of the APTA Specialist Certification Program are:
Promote the highest possible level of care for individuals seeking physical therapist services
Provide a reliable and valid method for certification of individuals who have attained an advanced level of knowledge and skill in each specialty area.

Another Mountain State PT success story! Cara Minor was a standout high school basketball and softball player at North Marion High School and played through a left shoulder injury. In 2019, Cara began her collegiate basketball career at Shepherd University. Unfortunately, early in her Freshman basketball season, she reinjured her L shoulder and was forced to undergo a SLAP/labral repair to stabilize her L shoulder.Cara’s surgery was performed in early March 2020 and began physical therapy at our Mannington office in April of 2020 under the direction of Board-Certified Sports Specialist Chris Moore. Her treatment began with very gentle hands-on stretching to regain shoulder range of motion and slowly progressed to gentle strengthening. Cara eventually progressed to aggressive strengthening, plyometrics, and basketball-specific overhead activities. In total, Cara spent 4 months in physical therapy and her hard work has paid off! Cara has now resumed her basketball career at Shepherd University and was finally able to get back into game action a few weeks ago (after some lengthy COVID-19 delays). Congrats Cara on a successful recovery! We wish you luck in your collegiate basketball and academic careers!!
Know your rights! If your physician refers you to a certain facility or clinic you ARE NOT OBLIGATED to schedule/attend PT at that facility. By law, you have the right to choose where you receive physical therapy treatment.
Choose a physical therapist and a physical therapy location/company who have a great deal of experience.
Choose a PT who is a Board-Certified Specialist through the American Physical Therapy Association. These physical therapists have been recognized as having advanced clinical knowledge, experience, and advanced skills in their specialty area of practice. Most common in outpatient physical therapy are specialists in Orthopedics(OCS) and Sports(SCS). You can find specialists in your area at abpts.org or at choosept.com.
Choose a location that is convenient for you and have appointments that fit your schedule. This will increase your chances of attending your appointments and thus increase your chances for a positive outcome.
Ask if the physical therapy clinic accepts your insurance company. Receiving treatment from a participating physical therapist/clinic will minimize your financial burden.
